Mr. Titanium
I first met Badrul Shah Baharuddin just before the turn of the millennium in 1999 when we were both students at UiTM’s Faculty of Art and Design in Shah Alam. I knew him then as Bad and since graduating, our paths have never crossed.
My family and I moved to Canada in early 2009 where on the opposite side of the world I learned from friends via Facebook that Bad had been ruthlessly struck down by a car in Brickfields. The driver of the car had apparently taken off without taking responsibility for what he had done. Bad meanwhile, was barely alive when the ambulance got to him. The prognosis did not look good and he remained in a coma for two weeks. Having shattered his skull, he would require a titanium plate to be screwed to his head. The assessment from friends was that he would not be the same if he made it. His fighting spirit and Allah’s grace however allowed him to live.
We moved back to Malaysia in December 2012 and I caught up again with Bad. He had just won the Mr. Selangor Amateur Bodybuilding Championships. His drive and determination following such an unfortunate experience deeply moved me. He agreed to do a Photo Essay on his life to share with others.
It was my intention to do a photo documentary in a direct approach - more candid moments, less choreographed shots. He had less than two months to prepare for the Mr. Malaysia Championships after having won the Mr. Selangor title, so I had to plan the shoots around his rather busy schedule. We met a few times at the gym and also his home. It was a pleasure for me to meet his family. He had recently been blessed with a baby boy.
There is one particular photo of Bad cradling his son. For that shot, I stood behind him to capture the titanium plate encapsulating his head with the baby in the background. The picture would symbolise the promise of the present juxtaposed with the scars of his past.
