Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community. Devotees will pray and make vows when the prayers are answered and they fulfill the vows by piercing parts of their body such as their cheeks, tongues, and backs before carrying a ‘Kavadi’ or milk pots on a four kilometre journey of faith.

Ratusan penganut Hindu menyertai perarakan sambil menjunjung barang-barang seperti kelapa, beras, minyak sapi dan sebagainya yang dibungkus dengan kain untuk dipersembahkan kepada Dewa Ayappa sebagai membayar nazar di Jalan Kebun Bunga pada Januari 14, 2016. Mereka yang berarak sejauh empat kilometer dari Kuil Sri Ramar, Jalan York ke Kuil Ayappa di atas kaki bukit, Jalan Kebun Bunga,Pulau Pinang.Upacara tahunan ini diadakan pada hari Makara Jyothi  setiap tahun dimana Mengikut kepercayaan penganut Hindu pada hari berkenaan Dewa Ayappa akan menjelma dan merestui mereka.
